Spring 2021 Creations Winner!
CONGRATULATIONS to AMANDA CIANELLA
of FRAMEZILLA; Pittsburgh, PA
Well, you can’t spell custom framing without you, our talented customers. Our jaws are on the floor over this beyond-custom custom Prisma frame design which was selected as the Spring Creations Design Winner. The piece is by emerging Chicago artist Kayla Mahaffey. Her work is well collected and Framezilla has framed several of her recent works.
This print belongs to an avid art collector and art advisor who promotes new and emerging artists. Check out Kia’s daily instagram art talks to make sure you’re informed on the latest and greatest. She has a great eye for design and always challenges Amanda to push the boundaries for her collections.
The client envisioned a frame painted to match the hues in the background of the print. Also, the strong horizontal linear elements in this particular image suggested extending the motif out onto the frame or mat. Initial tests on wood frames and mat board floats fell flat. Custom painting a clear acrylic Prisma instead gave the design a sleek and modern feel which was better suited to the piece and Kia’s contemporary aesthetic.
Keeping in mind the contemporary look, the print is floated between two sheets of acrylic for a light, airy feel. This posed a few technical challenges for fitting the piece and adding the hanging hardware, but through trial and error and even a few calls to Bella customer service, a solution was achieved. The result is a frame that is truly one of a kind and unique to this customer and this particular print. With this level of customization, the frame becomes a part of the art itself. This is not Framezilla’s first uber-custom Prisma rodeo.
With the clear Prisma as their canvas, the artists at Framezilla can offer almost limitless options. “We’ve used it to match different colors, patterns and accents from the art. We have also painted it and stacked it inside another frame in place of a mat. This way, we can design our “mat” with any detail we’d like to have which really expands the design horizons. We’ve created our own techniques to use these Prisma frames in different ways, aside from their traditional purposes!”
Let’s also congratulate the two Spring semi-finalists. Amazing work from everyone!
Congratulations again to Amanda and her creative team at Framezilla. Amanda is the first entry for the 2021 Creations Grand Prize - a trip to the WCAF trade show. Since the world is still in flux and we may find ourselves still grounded, the grand prize would be $1000 cash money! Who will get the big bucks? It won’t be you unless you enter! Be sure to photograph your next Bella or Prisma triumph and stay tuned for the next call for entries in early Summer!
