New Bella SUMMER 2024: Kusama
You’ve already met the colorful Bungalow 2.0 and dipped into sweet adventures with Ferrero, so for this last #BellaSummer2024 introduction we’re excited to take things in a whole new direction. It’s not so much what inspired our latest line, Kusama, but rather the who.
MEET KUSAMA
“I, Kusama, am the modern Alice in Wonderland” - Yayoi Kusama
If you happen to not be familiar with her, Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese contemporary artist working primarily in sculpture and installation but she also creates in painting, performance, video art, fashion, poetry, fiction and more - a multi-faceted woman to say the least. At 95 years young, she’s been lauded as one of the most important living artists to come out of Japan and also the world’s top-selling female artist.
If you have heard of her then the dot pattern prevalent on our new collection will come as no surprise. As a child, Kusama experienced hallucinations of dots, flowers and nets that engulfed her surroundings, covering everything from ceilings to windows, walls and more.
Vocal about her struggle with mental health and these hallucinations, she channeled the visions into repeated forms in her artwork. Much of her work contains repetition and reflects her overall artistic approach bearing titles with words like “infinity” and “accumulation” - including her immersive “infinity mirror rooms” of coloured lights and painted pumpkins and polka dots that reflect forever. Needless to say, social media and Instagram have brought a Kusama renaissance to the forefront of contemporary art in more recent years.
These dots take shape on our new mouldings, ranging from Infinite Grey Dots in Black and Cosmic Bronze Dots in Tan to Kaleidoscope Crimson Dots in Black. The effect is a frame that is equal parts subtle pattern and interesting contrasts. Available in a ¾” face in six distinct colors, these frames are sure to pop right off your wall.
Using it on pieces inspired by Kusama herself is a no-brainer with the inherent textural and color complements, but it also would look dreamy on simple photographs and prints.
